But then, my thoughts and views are not necessarily what would be considered those of the “average” African American frame of mind.
I don’t subscribe to this notion of always having to cater to white people or to march to their beat. Whether it’s us offering “gratitude” to a white-dominated justice system for finally holding someone accountable for Civil Rights murders or whether it’s us having to stay “in our place” in life, the subjugation of my race incenses me.
It truly angers me that we as a race are not taking charge of our lives. We have so much talent within our community that we can create the businesses, the organizations and the movements we need to take ourselves to a greater state of being. We don’t have to settle for racist systems, laws and practices that relegate us to second class citizenship. If, like my mother, we go and create something totally new using our own creativity, we can do something phenomenal.
